Are you a student who would be interested in taking an online course in summer school? Are you a parent who believes your child is the right candidate for taking an online course?
If you answered “yes” to one of these questions, then this opportunity might interest you: Virginia Beach City Public Schools is offering four online courses as part of its Virtual Virginia Beach e-Learning (VVBe) summer school program. The current course offerings are: Earth Science, English 9, Geometry and Government. To enroll in any of these courses, students must have met all prerequisites. Tuition fees for online courses are the same as those charged for the traditional face-to-face summer school offerings. It should be noted that these four online courses will also be offered during the 2008-2009 regular school year.
Online courses are an excellent way for students to accelerate their education, recover credit, move into advanced level courses, or make room in their schedules for additional electives they might otherwise miss.
Online courses create learning opportunities not limited by conventional location, time or pace. Students who choose to participate in online courses need to examine their personal skills and aptitudes for taking courses in this non-traditional setting. Online courses require different skills and learning styles than the more traditional courses. For instance, students enrolled in an online course are responsible for scheduling their own “class time.” Motivation and self-discipline are essential for success in an online course.
Summer online courses must be completed by the last day of summer school, August 8, and students are responsible for taking any associated Standards of Learning tests offered in August. This is a reminder that AP testing is being held from May 5-May 16. Make sure you are in your seat by 7:30 for AM exams and by 12:30 for PM exams. Please remember to bring pens, pencils, your student pack, and a calculator if necessary. Do not bring cell phones, MP3 players, food or drinks.
Sports Physicals for the 2008-2009 school year will take place at Landstown High School on Tuesday, May 27th, for girls and Wednesday, May 28th, for boys. The physicals will begin at 5:30pm and the cost is $20 (cash only please).
Time is running out to order your cap and gown for graduation. If you have not placed your order with Jostens, then you need to do so before May 19th. Go to Celebrate High School to complete the order before it’s too late.

The Junior Statesmen Summer Program is an opportunity for 1,300 high school students to take courses on the campuses of Princeton, Yale, Georgetown, and Stanford this summer. Students will attend classes six times a week and complete course work designed to increase their knowledge of government, leadership, and history. The program costs $4,450, which covers tuition, housing, meals, textbooks, and other academic expenses. Partial scholarships are available and are based on need and academic merit.
