Early College Scholars

Want to earn college credits while you are still in high school? The Early College Scholars Program is intended to encourage eligible high school students to complete requirements for high school and concurrently earn at least 15 hours of transferable credits towards a college degree. This program can potentially reduce the amount of college tuition for families. If you are taking, have already taken, or plan to take college-level coursework, (i.e. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, or Dual Enrollment) see your guidance counselor and sign up to be an Early College Scholar.

Scholarship Search

Peruse our local scholarship database at www.vbschools.com and link to Scholarship Central (SC), search for scholarships, and view all scholarships. Scholarships are listed in alpha order. There are a few scholarship opportunities for underclassmen; however, most are for seniors who plan to attend an accredited college or university in the fall of 2007. Seniors, if you fit the criteria, print the application; complete it; and submit it by the deadline. FastWeb.com is popular national scholarship database. Also, scholarships are available for military dependents, from parents’ workplaces, and from local businesses. Research these opportunities as well.

Scholarship Essays

Some scholarships require essays. Many students do not apply for scholarships that require essays because they say they do not have the time, along with their busy fall schedules and commitments, to write an essay; consequently, there is less competition for these scholarships. Students, write those essays, and apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship GPA's

The GPA cut-off for most scholarships is a 3.0. This GPA is calculated through the students’ junior year and is the actual GPA students must use when they apply for scholarships, not a projected GPA. This GPA is also included on the transcript that students must send with their applications. Each scholarship listed on SC will always denote if there is a GPA requirement.

Scholarship Transcripts

Students, most scholarships require you to include an official high school transcript as a part of the final scholarship packet. Students must make this transcript request in guidance with Ms. Adams or Mrs. Behre by completing a yellow Transcript Request form. At the time of their request, students must pay $2.00 for each transcript they request. Students will need to allow at least two weeks to process these requests. Students, once you get an idea of how many scholarship applications you will submit, you may request several transcripts at once and keep them until you are ready to send the scholarship applications. This is a great way to work with us in guidance to ensure that you have everything you need in a timely manner. Don’t wait until the last minute to make transcript requests.

Scholarship Recommendations Most scholarships require at least two recommendations, and at least one must be from a school official. Giving your guidance counselor or teachers two weeks’ advance notice of your needing a recommendation is a good rule of thumb. Scholarship committees only accept complete scholarship application packets, so be sure to include the exact recommendations required.
